MORLANOW
(Cornish/English: High tide)
“Morlanow” is a nice sounding word, though high tide (in English) is exactly what many small communities, coastal towns and villages my be facing in the not to distant future. Between September 2021 and June 2022 newspaper articles began appearing and highlighting a new climate study, of how under current forecasting conditions many places around our coastline will be lost to the sea by 2050 (just 28 years) with the rising sea levels.
Statement of Intent
Morlanow, Cornish for ‘high tide’ is a long term photo documentary of the changing coastlines and communities of the Southwest. With the latest climate change forecasting tools showing that parts of Devon and Cornwall will be lost to the sea, as a result of climate change.
Photography has a rich history in documenting environmental change, these images will serve as an archive and visual record of how these popular holiday destinations will change with the ocean taking its claim on the coastline, beaches and communities.
Exclusively shooting in monochrome (black and white) is not only a respectful nod to Herbert Hughes and John Charles Burrow who documented the regions geographical features during the early 1900’s. It removes the distraction of colour from the subject, while retaining its emotional qualities and cutting through the clutter of today’s visually saturated society.
